Baotou Aluminum: coal supply tightness eased as the bridge resumes operation

Beijing, February 17 (Antaike)- The coal supply tightness of Chinalco Baotou Aluminum Co., Ltd. (Baotou city of Inner Mongolia) has been gradually eased as the Deshengtai bridge resumed operation on February 5.

The bridge connects Baotou city and Erdos city, one of the key coal producing areas in China. Baotou Aluminum now has capacity of 1.35 million tpy primary aluminum and four captive coal-fired power generation units with a combined capacity of 1360 MW, which consumes nearly 20 kt of coal each day. The coal is delivered by trucks from Erdos through the bridge. Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus epidemic, the bridge was closed on January 28, which forced Baotou Aluminum to use another road for coal transportation, but the distance is much longer and the cost increases significantly. As a result, the aluminum company saw the coal stocks decreasing to a dangerous level.

Under the coordination and support by local government, the bridge resumed operation mainly for coal transportation of the aluminum company.
